Maintenance Engineer, Redditch, up to £40k

My client is an established manufacturing company based in Redditch. They are looking to add to their team by recruiting a new member to their maintenance team. They require a Maintenance Engineer who is a skilled, multi-disciplined engineer responsible for keeping production equipment and site services running safely and at full capability. The role is electrically biased, with strong mechanical and pneumatic competence across a varied manufacturing machines and associated equipment.

This is a hands-on, self-directed role. You will respond to breakdowns fast, plan and execute the PPM programme diligently, and works across the site without the need for close supervision. The ability to think clearly under production pressure, coordinate effectively with colleagues across departments, and know when to escalate is as important as the technical skill itself. The role ranges from fault-finding a PLC fault, carrying out a planned electrical inspection, managing a contractor on site and updating the CMMS before the shift ends. The right person will thrive in this type of environment.

Electrical Maintenance & Fault-Finding: –
*Carry out fault diagnosis and repair on electrical systems across the production and site estate — from three-phase power distribution and motor drives through to machine control panels, PLCs, servo systems and safety circuits.
*Fault-find systematically and efficiently under production pressure; get the press running, then find the root cause — not the other way around.
*Carry out electrical work in compliance with IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671); complete test and inspection records accurately and maintain electrical documentation for all plant.
*Programme, interrogate and modify PLC logic where required — Siemens, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley and similar platforms common in the press shop environment.
*Maintain and troubleshoot Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), servo amplifiers and motion control systems; liaise with OEM technical support where specialist input is needed.
*Manage and test safety-related electrical systems — light curtains, two-hand controls, interlocks, emergency stops — ensuring compliance with PUWER, Machinery Directive and relevant British Standards at all times.

Mechanical & Pneumatic Maintenance: –
*Carry out mechanical maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair across the press estate and ancillary equipment — clutches, brakes, gibs, slides, feeders, straighteners, reels and associated drive systems.
*Maintain and repair pneumatic systems across the site — circuits, valve banks, actuators, air preparation equipment, pressure regulation and leak management; interpret pneumatic schematics accurately.
*Carry out press stroke adjustment, bolster alignment, shut height setting and mechanical timing checks in coordination with the Tool Room and Production teams.
*Maintain hydraulic systems where fitted — power packs, cylinders, proportional valves and seals; recognise hydraulic faults and carry out repair or managed replacement.
*Carry out precision alignment, coupling changes, bearing replacements and shaft work as required; use appropriate measurement tools and techniques to achieve correct tolerances.

Production Machinery & Associated Equipment: –
*Develop and maintain deep working knowledge of the production machinery and associated equipment
*Understand the safety-critical requirements of power press operation — guarding standards, clutch and brake performance, overload protection, die protection systems and ensure all presses are maintained in full compliance with PUWER and the Safe Use of Power Presses ACOP (L112).
*Carry out and record statutory power press inspections in conjunction with the *Maintenance Manager and any appointed competent person; flag non-compliance or deterioration immediately.
*Work alongside press setters and operators during changeovers or equipment issues; provide technical support at machine-side and communicate clearly with production on return-to-service timelines.
*Build and maintain equipment history files for each press — recording faults, repairs, modifications and inspection outcomes — to support the PPM programme and inform future maintenance strategy.

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM): –
*Execute the PPM schedule as directed by the Maintenance Manager — completing tasks on time, to the required standard, and updating the CMMS (computerised maintenance management system) accurately after each visit.
*Carry out planned electrical inspections, insulation resistance testing, thermographic scanning and motor condition monitoring as part of the PPM programme.
*Complete mechanical PPM tasks: lubrication schedules, filter changes, belt and chain tension checks, coupling inspection, vibration monitoring and wear assessment across the plant estate.
*Identify deterioration during planned visits and raise defect notifications promptly; support the Maintenance Manager in prioritising and scheduling remedial work before it becomes a breakdown.
*Contribute to the development and improvement of the PPM programme — proposing task additions, interval changes or method improvements based on direct experience of the equipment.

Reactive Maintenance & Breakdown Response: –
*Respond to production breakdowns promptly and with urgency — attend machine-side, assess the fault, communicate an estimated return-to-service time, and work systematically to restore production.
*Work effectively under pressure without losing rigour — a fast repair that masks the root cause costs more than a slightly slower one that fixes it properly.
*Record all breakdown activity accurately: fault description, diagnosis, parts used, repair carried out, time to restore — providing the Maintenance Manager with the data needed to identify trends and drive improvement.
*Identify recurring faults and escalate patterns to the Maintenance Manager with supporting data; contribute to root cause analysis and the development of permanent corrective actions.
*Carry out emergency isolation and safe isolation procedures accurately and safely before any intervention on live or energised equipment; never bypass a safe isolation for the sake of speed.

Site-Wide Facilities & Services: –
*Maintain the site’s electrical infrastructure — distribution boards, sub-mains, lighting circuits, socket outlets and associated equipment — ensuring the site is safe, compliant and operationally reliable.
*Support the maintenance of site services including compressed air generation and distribution, heating and ventilation systems, welfare facilities and general building fabric where within the maintenance function’s remit.
*Manage contractor access for specialist works — electrical testing and inspection, lifting equipment thorough examination, pressure vessel inspection, fire alarm servicing and similar — ensuring contractors work safely and in compliance with site rules and permit-to-work procedures.
*Maintain and test the site’s emergency systems — fire alarm, emergency lighting, eyewash stations, fire suppression — and ensure all test records are current and available for inspection.
*Support the management of the maintenance stores — managing parts stock, raising purchase requests for consumables and spares, and ensuring critical spare holdings are maintained at agreed levels.

Health, Safety & Compliance: –
*Work at all times in compliance with the health and safety policy, safe systems of work and relevant legislation — including PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, Electricity at Work *Regulations and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
*Apply safe isolation and lock-off/tag-out (LOTO) procedures without exception before working on any equipment; challenge unsafe practices observed on the shop floor regardless of seniority.
*Operate the permit-to-work system correctly — raising, following and closing permits for hot work, confined space entry, work at height and electrical isolation as required.
*Maintain own competency records, statutory qualifications and training certificates; proactively identify and discuss development needs with the Maintenance Manager.
*Contribute to risk assessment review and method statement development for maintenance tasks; apply the hierarchy of controls and document the outcome accurately.

Cross-Departmental Coordination: –
*Work without close supervision for the majority of the working day — managing own priorities, communicating progress and seeking guidance from the Maintenance Manager when needed.
*Coordinate effectively with Production Supervisors and Team Leaders when attending machine-side breakdowns — communicating clearly on fault status, expected downtime and any production implications.
*Work alongside the Press Tool Room team when maintenance and tooling activity overlap — changeovers, press alignment, die protection systems — maintaining a respectful and collaborative working relationship.
*Liaise with the Quality & HS Manager on equipment compliance matters, risk assessments and any maintenance activity that affects product quality or process controls.
*Support new starters and less experienced team members in developing their practical skills and understanding of site procedures; share knowledge freely and set a high personal standard.

Candidate Requirements: –
*Recognised electrical engineering qualification or equivalent apprenticeship-served trade qualification.
*Demonstrable experience in an electrical maintenance role within a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
*Competent in fault diagnosis on PLCs, drives and machine control systems — able to read electrical schematics, ladder logic and wiring diagrams without assistance.
*Solid mechanical and pneumatic maintenance competence — able to diagnose and repair faults across a broad range of mechanical plant and pneumatic circuits.
*Experience of power press maintenance in a pressings or stamping environment, with working knowledge of press guarding, clutch/brake systems and PUWER requirements.
*Experienced in planned preventative maintenance programmes — able to work to a schedule, prioritise competing demands and maintain accurate records.
*Able to work unsupervised; self-managing, methodical and reliable.
*Clear communicator — able to give a production team a straight answer on downtime without being evasive or over-technical.

Desirable / Advantageous: –
*18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) — current certification preferred.
*Hydraulic maintenance competence.
*CMMS experience — familiar with work order management and maintenance records systems.
*IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
